About me

Hi, I’m Rodrigo Thauby, a Web Designer and Developer living in the beautiful Bay Area of San Francisco. I like to design beautiful user interfaces and craft engaging user experiences.

I’d like to work with you.

Short Bio

I created my first website in 1997 when I was 14 and have been doing it ever since.

Tip: don’t forget the password you used for your site when you were fourteen, you simply cannot erase that stuff (no matter how hard you try).

I continued to explore the possibilities of web design while I was in High School, but it was only around 2002 that I started doing some real work for small corporate entities and my University.

I graduated in 2005 with a Bachelors in Industrial Engineering from Adolfo Ibañez University, in Chile; and shortly after that I moved to United States, where I have been working as a UI Designer & Developer to date.

I have continued accepting freelance work, while also under the employ of Forio Business Simulations.

I am currently pursuing an MS in Internet Engineering at the University of San Francisco and enjoying every minute.

I built and shipped my first iPad app last year.

Where I want to go

I enjoy designing and building interfaces for non-Interwebs people; that will always be a big part of what I do. However, I am also very interested in the development of mobile applications, product design, marketing, etc — ideally getting involved in as many facets of software development as I possibly can.

What I know about the web

Though I don’t have any deals to write books, I do read a lot of them.

I get the bulk of my learning from people like Andy Clarke, Jefferey Zeldman, Shaun Inman and Eric Meyer, among others. I have attended conferences where some of these people have talked.

I spend the majority of my time writing javascript and obsessing about my css sheets. I enjoy programming and building tools on Ruby and Python, my languages of choice.

Some of my Inspiration

I find it’s rather hard not to get influenced by other artists, or other artforms for that matter. In that sense, I find a great deal of inspiration from a bunch of places, which can be tough to summarize. Music, movies, software, other designers, things I see, pictures... you name it.
Here are a few that I can think of:

  1. Stan Lee

    Stan Lee

    Genius

That’s right, true believer!  Stan “The Man” is one of my real-life heroes, and truly an inspiration and encouragement to use our imagination.

  2. Jeffrey Zeldman

    Jeffrey Zeldman

    Web Designer

Wether you’ll admit it or not, the man is the Internet.  From A List Apart to the Web Standards Project.  I’d move back to PA for this guy!

  3. Andy Clarke

    Andy Clarke

    Web Designer

Andy’s book “Transcending CSS” was a real eye opener for me, it taught me quite a few things.  I had the pleasure of meeting Andy at FOWD back in 2006 (I think?).

  4. Tool

    Tool

    Band

These guys are, without a doubt, my favorite band. I couldn’t even think of spending all those countless hours building sites without rocking to their songs.

Rodrigo...?

I hail from the land of empanadas, vino and pisco.

That’s Chile, in case you didn’t know.

So yeah, it happens that Rodrigo is a very common name where I’m from (Don’t forget to roll your R’s).
